Missing Danielle’s Uncle Re-Arrested

The uncle of missing schoolgirl Danielle Jones was arrested yesterday on suspicion of her murder and was being interrogated by detectives last night.

Stuart Campbell, a 43-year-old builder, who had been questioned previously over the disappearance of the 15-year-old, was arrested at his breakfast table at 7:15 am. He was driven 30 miles to Harlow police station where he arrived with his head covered by a blanket.

Police deliberately chose a location some distance from where Danielle vanished to minimise the risk of protest from local people. As Essex police questioned him throughout the day, a force spokesman said: ‘It is very unusual to hold a man on suspicion of murder when a body has not been found. We fear the worst.’

Campbell is married to the sister of Danielle’s father, Tony. A police liaison officer was keeping Mr Jones, 40, and wife Linda, 41, informed of developments at their home in East Tilbury, Essex. They were reported to be ‘very upset’, and their distress was made worse by the fact that a member of their own family was being questioned over their daughter’s disappearance.

Mrs Jones has said she fears that her daughter is dead.

Campbell, who has protested his innocence, was first arrested on suspicion of her abduction five days after she vanished and was released on police bail.

Police said they expected to continue questioning Campbell, whom they did not name, and were prepared to hold him for up to 96 hours without charge.

Inspector Alan Cook of Essex Police said: ‘This has been a very difficult investigation. We are eight or nine weeks into the investigation and we fear for the worst. We have not found Danielle or any of her belongings and we must continue the search.’1
